CROP CIRCLES 2005 - A REVIEW OF A DIFFERENT KIND

Wie schon in den vergangen Jahren, so soll im Folgenden auch ein Rückblick auf die vergangene Kornkreis-Saison 2005 genommen werden. Dabei soll es in diesem Rückblick nicht darum gehen, die großen und bekannten Formationen erneut zu zelebrieren, sondern einen detaillierten Blick auf die eher leiseren Fälle des Jahres zu werfen. Oft sind es gerade diese Fälle, die faszinierende Einblicke auf ein authentisches Phänomen ermöglichen.

Sommer 2005 (2004): Noble County, Indiana, USA
Bei einem Flug über Noble County, Indiana, entdeckte der amerikanische Fotograf und Kornkreisforscher Roger Sudgen von ICCRA die Reste einer besonders merkwürdigen Formation in einem Acker. Weitere Untersuchungen ergaben, dass es sich dabei um einen so genannten "Geist" einer bis dato unbekannten Formation aus dem Sommer 2004 handelte.

Doch nicht nur das "alte" Muster, welches deutlich an eine Art Assel oder deren urzeitlichen Vorfahren erinnert, verblüffte. Es zeigten sich auch merkwürdige Muster im Erdboden, die um die ehemalige Formation herum verliefen. Diese schienen das Muster "energetisch" auszuweiten.

Bereits 1995 zeigten sich ähnlich "energetisch" wirkende Muster und Linien im East Field, nahe Alton Barnes in Wiltshire, die vom "Geist" der Formation des Vorjahres ausgingen. Vorher und danach wurden diese Linien noch nie im East Field beobachtet.

21. Juni 2005: Boreham Down, Wiltshire, England
Am frühen Abend des 21. Juni 2001 fuhr der Industriedesigner und Künstler Mike Booth mit seinem Mountainbike von Marlborough nach Alton Barnes. Gegen 18.30 Uhr kam er an den Feldern bei Boreham Down entlang der West Woods vorbei und machte dabei eine ebenso merkwürdige wie interessante Beobachtung, die er in einem Telefon-Interview mit der Wissenschaftsjournalistin Linda Moulton Howe ausführlich beschrieb. Einige Wochen später traf ich (A.M.) Mike Booth am Ort seiner Beobachtung:

„Meine Aufmerksamkeit richtete sich auf drei Objekte im Feld linkerhand der Strasse. Ich habe direkt angehalten, da ich sofort merkte, dass ich da etwas sah, was ich noch nie zuvor gesehen hatte.

Diese Objekte waren etwa 1,3 Meter breit, etwa 1,8 Meter in der Länge mit einem 60 bis 90 Zentimeter hohen, leicht gewölbten Oberteil, welches gerade so oberhalb der Ähren aus dem Feld schaute. Zu dieser Zeit sind die englischen Felder saftig grün, und so stachen diese weiß-metallischen Objekte deutlich daraus hervor. (...) Das Feld zieht sich leicht empor, und so war es einfach diese Objekte, Gefährte oder was immer sie auch waren, zu beobachten.

(...) Sie befanden sich etwas abgesenkt zwischen den Ähren, etwa 15 bis 25 Zentimeter im Getreide, aber nicht bis zum Boden. Sie kämmten die Weizenähren ganz sachte vor sich nach unten und erzeugten somit eine Spur, eine Gasse im Getreide – jedoch kein besonderes Muster.

Zwei dieser Objekte waren kaum 10 Meter voneinander entfernt. Ein Drittes befand sich etwa 45 Meter zu meiner Rechten etwa oberhalb des Hügels. Da war wohl auch ein viertes Objekt, denn als ich am folgenden Tag (Mittwoch, 22. Juli) zurückkam um Fotos zu machen, fand ich auch noch einen vierten Pfad im Weizen, den ich zuvor aufgrund der Feldlage nicht einsehen konnte.

(...) Das Getreide wurde jedoch nicht völlig flach niedergedrückt. Diese „Maschinen“ kämmten lediglich durch die Weizenähren und hinterließen dabei einen Pfad, der lediglich etwa 25 Zentimeter tiefer lag als das normale Feld.

(...) Die Objekte hatten eine längliche nach oben gewölbte Form. Ich selbst habe viel mit Gussformen gearbeitet, und sie sahen geradezu gegossen aus. Keine Kannten, sanfte Übergänge. Man könnte sie etwa mit der Form einer Computer-Maus vergleichen.

(...) Ihre Farbe war weiß, aber eher weiß-metallic. Es war ein schöner Abend, und die Sonne wurde von ihnen reflektiert. Ich habe mit Sicherheit noch nie etwas Vergleichbares gesehen. Ich habe mir auch überlegt, was es möglicherweise alles sein könnte. Ich dachte an irgendwelche landwirtschaftlichen oder wissenschaftliche Geräte oder gar Fälscher, die sich unter irgendeiner Art von Konstruktion versteckten. Aber es war nur allzu offensichtlich, dass es nichts dergleichen sein konnte, da das Getreide nur sanft niedergebeugt war und nicht flach zu Boden gedrückt wurde, wie als wenn diese Objekte den Boden berührt hätten. Zwei der Objekte befanden sich zu beiden Seiten der Tracktorspur. Ich denke kein Farmer würde absichtlich sein Getreide hier durchfahren.“

(...) Die Objekte, die ich sah, haben zur Zeit meiner Beobachtung (Dienstagabend) KEINEN Kornkreis gemacht, wie er dann am nächsten Tag  (22. Juni) im gleichen Feld entdeckt wurden.“

(...) Ich hatte immer eine offene Einstellung gegenüber Kornkreisen. Einige von ihnen sind so groß und komplex, dass ich mir persönlich einfach nicht wirklich erklären kann, wie sie des Nachts mit Lasern und Seilen gemacht werden sollten.

Aber die Objekte, die ich sah, kann ich nicht direkt mit dem dann entdeckten Kornkreis in Verbindung bringen. Aber sie bewegte sich langsam feldaufwärts, wobei sie das Getreide leicht niederbeugten. Da gibt es auch keinen Zweifel – ich habe ja auch die Fotos.

22. Juni 2005: Boreham Down, Wiltshire, England
Unabhängig von den merkwürdigen Spuren am Feldrand zeigte die dann am folgenden Tag entdeckte Formation im Kontext der Untersuchungen Details auf, die für menschliche Fälscher als Urheber sprechen. Das auffälligste Merkmal ist wohl die formelle Übereinstimmung des Designs dieser Formation mit einem Ziermuster zweier Formationen des gleichen Jahres, die in unseren Augen (A. Müller u. W. Anderhub) zweifelsohne von einer lokal aktiven Fälschergruppe angelegt wurden. Zudem zeigen sich logische Fehler im grafischen Aufbau, wie es der tschechische Forscher Viktor Mika auf den entsprechenden Seiten von www.cropcircleconnectors.com aufzeigt:

Später entsteht ein weiteres vermeintliches Mysterium: Die niedergelegten Flächen zwischen dem stehenden Muster und der Außenseite des Kreises werden feinsäuberlich abgemäht, und viele fragen sich, wie dies geschehen konnte, warum und von wem? Mit einem gewöhnlichen Mähdrescher wäre eine solche Detailarbeit unmöglich. Eine Anfrage bei Farmer Mr. Maud genügte jedoch für eine einfache und zurfriendestellende Antwort. Dieser hatte die Flächen mit einem kleinen Kreiselmäher entfernt, um weitere Besucher zu entmutigen sein Feld zu betreten...
Noch am gleichen Morgen wurde dann ganz in der Nähe (ca. 2 km entfernt) eine zweite Formation mit einer gänzlich anderen Formensprache entdeckt.

4. August 2005: Boreham Down, Wiltshire, England
Um 04.23 Uhr am 4. August 2005 führte der französiche Forscher Pierre Beake im Innern des Kornkreises von Boreham Down nahe Lockeridg in Wiltshire eines seiner zahlreichen Fotoexperimente durch. Diese Experimente beinhalten die Anfertigung zahlreicher spontaner Fotoaufnahmen über einen längeren Zeitraum. Die dabei entstandenen Digitalfotos werden dann später am Computer detailgenau auf "Anomalien" untersucht. Während der Aufnahmen kontrolliert eine zweite Person - in diesem Falle Pierre Beakes Frau - das Blickfeld der Kamera, um spätere Verwechselungen mit bekannten Objekten wie Flugzeugen, Vögeln usw. auszuschließen. Hierbei entstehen jeweils eine Vielzahl an Fotos, von denen in der Regel kaum eines besondere "Anomalien" aufzeigt... doch wie so oft bestätigen immer wieder auch faszinierende Ausnahmen die Regel. So auch während dieses Experimentes:

Eines der Bilder zeigt ein merkwürdiges Objekt am Himmel über dem Feld und den dahintergelegenen West Woods.

Während viel spekuliert wird, bleibt bislang unbekannt, was die "Anomalie" tatsächlich darstellt. Die erste Vermutung, es könnte sich um einen Paraglider handeln, wird durch verschiedene Argumente widerlegt:
Zum einen wurde ein solcher Paraglider von der Kontrollperson nicht beobachtet.
Des Weiteren zeigen weder die Aufnahmen davor noch die Späteren dieses oder ein ähnliches Detail. Zum anderen ist diese Gegend für die Ausübung dieses Sportes ungeeignet. Erst die weiter entfernt gelegene Hügelseite des Golden Ball Hill, in dessen Richtung das Foto zwar gemacht wurde, bietet diese Möglichkeit und wird auch dementsprechend genutzt - hier jedoch auch wiederum die den West Woods abgekehrte Hügelseite.

Zuletzt stimmen viele Betrachter des Bildes darin überein, dass sich die Anomalie wahrscheinlich in etwa der gleichen Entfernung und somit Höhe befindet wie der nahestehende Baum an der linken Bildseite - auch dies würde (auf die örtlichen Begebenheiten übertragen) gegen einen Paraglider sprechen, da dieser an dieser Position keine Flugbedingungen vorfände. Erstrecht nicht ohne dass er von beakes Frau gesehen worden wäre.


Die lokale Situation: Der rote Punkt markiert den Kornkreis (siehe rechtes Bild) vom 22. Juni 2005, aus welchem die Fotos in Richtung Golden Ball Hill gemacht wurden. Der Trichter markiert das Sichtfeld der Kamera und den abgebildeten Bildauschnitt.

21/22.Juni 2005, Leicester, Buncombe County, North Carolina, USA
Am späten Abend des 21. Juni 2005 gegen 23:15h beobachteten über ein Dutzend Augenzeugen – darunter auch eine Bauersfamilie – ein blendendes Lichtphänomen, das über mehrere Sekunden andauerte. Noch aus einer Entfernung von 16 Kilometern war das Phänomen wahrzunehmen, und überall verhielten sich auch Tiere und Vieh auffallend unruhig. Der Hund der Bauersfamilie, der normalerweise im Freien gehalten wird, versuchte, eine Tür einlaufen, um hinein zu gelangen. Andere merkwürdige Lichtphänomene wurden in der Gegend schon seit etwa seit Monat beobachtet.

Am nächsten Morgen entdeckte die Bauersfamilie die Kornkreisformation in einem absolut isoliert gelegenen und abgezäunten Feld mit Heugras. Der zentrale Kreis hatte einen Durchmesser von 18,3 Metern, die drei kleineren Satellitenkreise maßen 1,2 – 1,5 Meter im Durchmesser. Besonders auffällig war die Art und Weise, wie der zentrale Kreis in einer Art „S“-Muster niedergelegt war. Rund um die Entdeckung der Formation gab es keine ungewöhnliche Wettererscheinungen.

Kurz nach der Entdeckung war der Sohn der Familie als erster vor Ort. Er bemerkte einen Geruch, der Ihn an ein Lagerfeuer erinnerte. Tatsächlich zeigten die Zentren der kleinen Satellitenkreise auch Brandspuren and Pflanzen und Böden.

Die Formation wurde dann am Wochenende des 4. Juli vor Ort von den amerikanischen Forschern J. Wilson, D. Knoechelman, T. Robertson und R. Sugden von ICCRA untersucht . Es wurden intensive Untersuchungen durchgeführt, wobei die Formation über drei Tage lang mittels Geigerzähler und auf elektromagnetische Strahlung überwacht wurde. Hierbei zeigte sich erneut, dass innerhalb der Formation eine leicht erhöhte Radioaktivität vorhanden war. Elektromagnetische Anomalien konnten keine festgestellt werden. An den Pflanzen wurden zudem die bekannten physiologischen Veränderungen (L-NEAT / Knotenausdehnung) festgestellt. Eine detaillierte Auswertung der Untersuchungen durch ICCRA steht noch aus.
 
Bei der Untersuchung der Formation kam es zudem zu einem kuriosen Fund: Im stehenden Gras zwischen dem Zentralkreis und einem Satellitenkreis fand sich ein kleines Vogelnest mit unbeschädigten Eiern – und trotz der offenkundigen Hitzeeinwirkung bei der Korkreisentstehung schlüpften später aus diesen Eiern kleine ,gesunde Vogeljunge.

1. Juli 2005: Ranzano, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Itaien
Am 4. Juni besuchte der italienische Kornkreisforscher Nikola Duper ein mitlerweile für seine Kornkreise bekanntes Feld bei Ranzano, um hier eine neu entdeckte Kornkreisformation in Augenschein zu nehmen.

Während seiner Untersuchungen traf er auch erneut auf den Besitzer des Feldes. Dieser berichtete ihm, dass die Frau, welche den Kornkreis gegen 11:30 am Morgen des 1. Juni gemeldet hatte, eine merkwürdige Beobachtung machen konnte: Sie erzählte, dass sie an diesem Morgen zu dem kleinen Gebetsschrein des Heiligen St. Antonio gegangen sei, um eine Kerze anzuzünden. Nun befindet sich diese kleine Kapelle unmittelbar neben dem Feld. Beim Anzünden und Beten stand sie also mit dem Rücken zum Feld. Plötzlich will sie eine starke Lichtreflektion vom Felde her wargenommen haben. Sie drehte sich um und sah die neue Formation, welche ihr zumindest bei ihrer Ankunft noch nicht aufgefallen war. Sie lief in Richtung der Kornkreisformation, welche nur etwa 50 Meter entfernt war, und sah hierbei, wie zwei rosenfarbene Lichtkugeln aus dem Feld aufstiegen und rasch gen Himmel verschwanden. Die Dame beschrieb die beiden kugelförmigen Lichhtphäniomene als relativ klein, etwa 12 Zentimeter Durchmesser und rosenfarben. Sie erzählte ebenfalls, dass sich in den vergangen zwei Wochen weitere, ähnliche Phänomen in der Gegend zugetragen hätten, die auch von anderen Dorfbewohnern beobachtet wurden.

5. Juli 2005: Greene County, Ohio, USA
Beim Mähen seines Weizenfeldes entdeckte ein Farmer am 5. Juli 2005 im Greene County im US-Bundesstaat Ohio eine merkwürdige Kornkreisformation. Es handelte sich um ein 13,4 m x 10,7 m großes Rechteck, in dem der reife Weizen in einer Art Fischgrätenmuster verwoben niedergelegt war.

Insgesamt waren 60 Saatreihen zu jeweils 4 Reihen unterschiedlicher Lagerichtung betroffen. Interessanterweise wurden keine der bekannten physiologischen Veränderungen an den betroffenen Pflanzen vorgefunden. Die Ergebnisse der Bodenuntersuchungen durch BLT stehen noch aus.

Des Weiteren gibt es merwürdige Beoabchtungen der Feldanwohner: Ein Nachbarsehepaar beobachtete ein merkwürdiges, farbig-flackerndes Leuchten, welches 20 Minuten lang am wolkenlosen Himmel über den Feldern zu sehen war. Der Farmer selbst bemerkte ein seltsames Verhalten des Hofhundes. Seit dem vermeintlichen Entstehungszeitpunkt habe dieser immer wieder versucht, ins Haus zu gelangen oder den Schutz der Garage gesucht, obowhl er normalerweise im Freien lebt. Nach etwa zwei Wochen habe er sich dann wieder normal verhalten.

17. Juli 2005: Waden Hill, Avebury, Wiltshire, England
Der amerikanische Kornkreisforscher Rod Bearcloud Berry besucht
seit Jahren das sommerliche Wiltshire, um im Gebiet um Alton Barnes und Avebury die dortigen Kornkreise zu be- und untersuchen. Bearcloud, selbst von Stamme der Osagen, sieht in den «echten» Formationen Botschaften des mythischen Sternenvolkes aus den
Überlieferungen der AmerIndianer. Am 16. Juli 2005 hatte er "das intensive Empfinden",
dass irgendetwas Besonderes in den Feldern um Avebury passieren würde. So fuhr er die Gegend auch den ganzen Tag auf Ausschau nach neuen Kreisen ab – jedoch
ohne Erfolg. Am nächsten Morgen wurde er schon gegen 2:50 Uhr wach und verspürte erneut das Bedürfnis, nach Avebury an die Felder zu fahren. Gegen 3:20 Uhr kam er am Parkplatz beim Ringwall des berühmten Steinkreises an. Mit seinem Nachtsichtgerät überblickte er das Feld, das er ob des klaren Morgens gut einsehen konnte. Nichts war zu sehen.

Auch ein zweiter Kontrollblick kurz darauf zeigte nichts. Daraifhin fuhr Bearcloud weiter nach Altoin Barnes. Gegen 4.45 Uhr war es dann hell genug, um die Felder auch mit bloßem Auge klar und deutlich einzusehen, und Bearcloud fuhr zurück nach Avebury. Am selben Parkplatz angekommen sah Bearcloud schockiert nun exakt in jenem Feld, welches er kurz zuvor noch kontrolliert hatte, eine neue, komplexe Formation liegen!

Die Formation zeigte ein so genanntes «Penrose Dreieck», eine der bekanntesten "unmöglichen" Formen, Körper und optischen Illusionen. Umgeben ist dieses Dreick von 24 quadrierten Spiralen, die an antike Ornamentik erinnern – doch gerade diese Ornamentik spricht die Sprache gefälschter Muster des Vorjahres am Silbury Hill und späterer Formationen des Sommers 2005 nahe Uffington, welche trotz ihrer Komplexität nach unseren Untersuchungsergebnissen einem geübten Fälscherteam zuzurechnen sind (siehe Fall: 22. Juni 2005: Boreham Down)...

Bereits am Mittag fuhr schließlich der Farmer samt Mähdrescher durch die Formation und zerstörte sie teilweise – um dann absurderweise NACH dieser Aktion am Feldrand eine Kasse für zukünftige Besucher aufzustellen...

The following review of the 2005 CropCircle season will be again of a differnt sort. It will focus less on the big formations but more on the subtle and more silent events in the background. event rarely covered by the media but with fascinating content and detail abckground.

Summer 2005 (2004): Noble County, Indiana, USA
Being on a photoflight over Noble County, photographer and crop circle researcher Roger Sudgen of ICCRA discovered a remarkable but strange pattern in a local field. A ground investigation showed that what they saw from above was the "Ghost" of a formation of the previous summer (2004).

But it was not only the strange design of the formations itself that was of special interest. All arround the originally flattened pattern of lines - creating some sort of trilobit or woodlouse - a strange discolouration was visible in the ground. This pattern showed a clear connection to the remains of the formation and it created the impression as if it enlarged the formations outline into som sort of energetic "aura-pattern" all around it.

A similar effect was observed already in the summer of 1995 in the famous East Field near Alton Barnes in Wiltshire, England. Also in this case the "Ghost" of a previous year's formation (the famous "East Field Eye" of 1994) was again visible again in the 1995 crop. But when viewed from high above this "ghost" became the centre of a whole set of strange lines, created by some sort of discoloration in the crop, forming "magnetic" like rings emerging out of the "ghost". This effect has never been noticed beforre nor afterwards in East Field - a fact that makes it unlikely to be explainable by subterrain (archaeological) structures.

On the early evening of June 21, 2005, local artists and former industrial designer Mike Booth was on his regular mountanbike-tour between Marlborough and Alton Barnes. At about 6.30pm he passed the field below the West Woods near Boreham Down and here he made a strange but interesting observation. A sighting that he later explained in a phone-interview with Linda Moulton Howe. Later this summer I (A.M.) met with Mike Booth at the place were it happened:

"My attention was caught by three objects moving in the field to the left hand side along the road. I stopped my bike because I realised that I have never seen anything like this before. The objects were about 1,3 m wide and about 1,8 m in length with a 0,6 - 0,9 m high bulged top that was pointing out of the crop. Because of the intensive green of the field at that time of the year the contrast to the metallic-whitish objects was quite strong. The field slopes slightly upwards in direction of the West Woods trees. Therefore it was easy to observe the descending objects.

(...) The objects were hovering inside the crop and it looked as if they were sort of combing through the crop. While doing this they slightly flattened the crop downards without breaking. However, they did not create what one would call a crop circle formation. They only left strange pathways.

Two objects were not more than 10 meters appart from each other while a third was hovering in a distance of about 45 meters more close to the hill. Very likely there was even a fourth object that I had not seen at that time. But when I returned the next day, I dscovered even a fourth track that looked absolutely similar to the ones which I observed beeing caused by the objects.

(...)The plants were not completely flattened to the ground. Those "machines" seemed to have hovered slightly above the ground while gently flattening the crop about 0,25 m lower that the surrounding normal field.

The objects had a doomed shape. I have worked with casting moulds and the objects had exactly this kind of feeling. There were no sharp edges just smooth transitions. One could compare the shapes of the object that I saw sticking out of the crop with the shape of a computer-mouse.

The colour was a metallic-white. It was a nice evening and the object did even reflect the light of the descending sun. I am sure that I have never seen anything like it before and I also started thinking about what the objects could have been. First I was thinking about some sort of remote controlled farming machines or sientific devices. I even wondered about hoaxers hiding underneath some sort of construction - but all those ideas made no real sense.

(...) Again, the object did NOT make what you would call a crop circle - at least not at the time of my observation (Tuesday evening). However, the next morning (June 22) a new crop circle was discovered neabry in the very same field.

(...) I allways kept an open mind about crop circles. I guess some of them are simply to large and far to complex to be the result of nocturnal hoaxing and I as a designer and artists see no way how you would create such a thing with ropes and boards. Still, the objects that I saw did not make a crop circle and based on my observation there was also no direct link with the crop circle formation that was discovered the very next day. Maybe I am wrong?! Bute they did leave tracks of gently flattened crop in the very same field...so maybe there is a connection.

June 22, 2005: Boreham Down, Wiltshire, England
The following morning after Mike Booth had the above described observation, a new and complex crop circle formation was discovered in the very same field. However, when investigated this formation showed signs of human hoaxing activity. One of the most notorious signs (at least for us) was the obvious similarity between the design of the new formation to later created formations at Uffington that were (in our view and based on our ground investigations) obvious but spectacular man-made hoaxes. Later another alledged myth was added to this new formation. It was obvious that somebody had cut the flattened areas within the formation in such a precise way, that the formation still looked like in its original condition when viewed from a distance. Some claimed that this fact was rather mysterious as normally when framers destroy their formation to keep visitors away, they do this as best visible as possible. This new cutting seems to have made no sense in this way and it was impossible to achove this precise cutting with a normal harvesting machine. However the mystery was not more than a myth. A phone-call with the owning farmer showed that he did indeed cut the areas himself but with a small lawn mower to avoid further damagage to the rest of the field simply to displease and discourage future visitors...

...while at the same morning a second new formation of a complete different style was discovered less than 2 kilometers away.

August 4, 2005: Boreham Down, Wiltshire, England
On August 4, 2005 at 4:23pm French researcher Pierre Beake was carrying out one of his numerous photo-experiments inside the above described crop circle formation at Boreham Down, near Lockeridge in Wiltshire. Over a long term period and together with his wife he was taking hundrets of digital photos of the surrounding area. The results of those experiments are investigated intesively back home on the computer. Out of the hundrets of normal photos with nothing unusual on it, from time to time Pierre and his team discover extraordinary details such as for example strange objects captured on film. While one person takes the photos a second (in this case Pierres wife) controlls the scenery with his eyes to look out for anything strange or normal that could be misinterpreted later.

And again, the photo-session inside the Boreham Down crop circle showed an interesting but strange result in the sky above the nearby West Woods.

While there is a lot of speculation about what this "anomaly" might be, there is no answer to this question so far. A first idea was that it could be a paraglider. However, this idea can be disproved for the following reasons:

First of all, NO paraglider nor similar activities were observed by the controlling person at the time the photos were taken and there is only one photos showing this "object". General paragliding activities would have been visible also on previous and following pictures - but none are. Furthermore, the general area and direction in which the photo was taken (see: following map) is no paragliding area and not suitable for this sport. Others places nearby - such as for example Golden Ball Hill and Milk Hill areas - were people do paragliding are to far away to explain the "object".

Finally the position of the "object" seems to coincide with the distance of the West Woods trees - again an argument against the idea that the object might be a paraglider caught in a strange angled movement as paragliding would be impossible there.

June 21/22, 2005, Leicester, Buncombe County, North Carolina, USA
On the late evening of June 21, 2005, at about 11.15 PM more than a dozen witnesses- including the landowners - observed a “blinding light” lasting for several seconds. Witnesses from a 10 mile radius around the formation reported seeing the light, and animals in all those locations were also reported to have been extremely agitated – the landowners’ dog located at the time in a basement “tried to rip the door off”. The landowners subsequently reported that they had previously seen the brilliant, white light “one month to the day” before the circles were found but nothing else unusual had occurred at that time, and that they had seen unusual light phenomena and BOL’s in previous years on at least two other occasions in this valley.

The next morning, a four-circle formation was found in 6’-7’ tall hay was discovered by the landowners family. No tracks were found leading into the isolated, gated field. The largest circle was approx. 60’ in diameter; the three smaller circles were tangent to the main circle and were 4-5’ in diameter. The main circle had an ‘S-shaped’ lay. There was no unusual weather at the time, and it had not rained in the area for the previous 7-10 days.

The first person upon arrival at the circles reported that “the area smelled like a campfire that had just been put out.” Photos taken by the landowners upon arrival at the formation the first morning of discovery showed the smaller circles’ centers were ‘burned’ – both plants and soil.

ICCRA members Jeffrey Wilson, Delsey Knoechelman, Ted Robertson, and Roger Sugden traveled to western North Carolina over the July 4th weekend to survey this formation. Upon arriving, we placed a GammaScout Geiger Counter in the main circle and began taking radiation measurements. We continuously monitored the formation over the course of the next two days. Preliminary results show an increase in radioactivity in the formation versus normal background control readings taken outside the formation. Those results will be forthcoming. There were no unusual E- M readings detected. The ICCRA collected both plant and soil samples from this formation for further analysis. This formation tested L-NEAT positive for node elongation. Soil analysis will be forthcoming. The landowners subsequently reported that they had previously seen the brilliant, white light “one month to the day” before the circles were found but nothing else unusual had occurred at that time, and that they had seen unusual light phenomena and BOL’s in previous years on at least two other occasions in this valley. Originally the landowners’ son and daughter-in-law listed samples of this formation on eBay (which is how the ICCRA learned of the formation) because they believed someone might be interested in the formation, but the landowners had been hesitant to go to the media for fear of ridicule. This appears to be incidental to how the formation got there, and doesn’t appear to have been motive to create a hoax.

Additional discoveries were that, located just up the road, was a small triangular-shaped rye field which apparently was also unusually flattened around the triangle layout of the field on the same night as the formation. Later a second RDF (randomly downed formation), roughly square-shaped, appeared across the street in young corn.

In the area where two of the crop circles became tangent to one another, a bird’s nest remained untouched, and later the eggs hatched with seemingly no harm to the hatchlings.


Despite indictaion of heat and burning (l.): The hatchlings that hatched out out of the eggs were unharmed.

July 1, 2005: Ranzano, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy
On June 4, 2005, Italian crop circle researccher Nikola Duper revisited a an Italian field near Ranzano that has become a regular and more or less famous spot for new crop circles in Italy. Also this year the field showed a new formation that was discovered on June 1. While investigation the formation Nikola Duper learnt of a local woman who had an interesting observation:
"The lady told us that on Wednesday, 1st June, at about 11.30 in the morning, she had come to the field to light a candle at the little shrine of St. Antonio. While she was still standing in front of the shrine, turning her back to the field, she perceived the reflection of a strong light, like a flash. She turned around and saw the formation you can see on the photo. She hurried towards the crop circle, which is about 50 metres from the shrine, and as she approached it, she saw two balls of light rising quickly towards the sky. They were not very large, approximately 12 cm in diameter and rather rose-coloured. She told me that during the last two years she had had experiences with other mysterious phenomena which had also been observed also by other people too."

July 5, 2005: Greene County, Ohio, USA
While harvesting his field of wheat a farmer discovered a new and strange crop circle formation in Greene County, Ohio. The farmer, who wishes to remain anonymous, discovered an approximately 44' x 35' rectangle of downed wheat as he was harvesting his field, at first thinking the downed-crop area had been caused by deer.  Upon closer examination he realized there was a distinct design to the manner in which the plants were bent over, resulting in a "woven" or interlaced herringbone pattern throughout the flattened crop.

The farmer reports that the 4 rows of wheat along the Southern edge of the field were not affected and that he saw no footprints or tracks in the flattened areas or along the grassy edge of the field.  From the air the peculiar squarish overall design does not suggest a typical crop circle, and the herringbone lay of the plants is not apparent.  The farmer had begun cutting along the Southern edge (closest to the green soybean field) of the wheat field and then swung across the very irregular East edge of the formation, obscuring some of the original detail there.
  
Examination on the ground by the farmer on July 5th, and later on by BLT fieldworkers JoAnne Scarpellini and Nick Reiter on July 19-20 & 23 showed that the intricate character of the lay was intact, except where the combine had either cut some of the rows or had blown chaff out over a part of the formation.  The wheat had been planted in a 7" drill (7" apart) and there were 60 rows of flattened plants running E/W.

A neighbour and his wife report a strange lighted object in th sky on the same afternoon that the formation was discovered - a cloud-like object which seemed to be "flickering" in a manner similar to a fluorescent light - which boh husband and wife took at first to be lightning, although there were no storm clouds present and no thunder or rain.  For 20 minutes or so they observed multiple flashing incidents, with very intense colors appearing for 2-3 seconds, the colors becoming more and more intense as the incidents continued.  The husband, who works as a lineman for the local power company, stated that there was no "blue color, as in a transformer going off," but that the flashing looked more like an "ignition of some sort" inside the cloud. 

And the farmer reported that he observed that his farm dog (which does not live in the house) had suddenly exhibited very strange behavior, refusing to go outside as was its custom, attempting instead to stay inside the family's garage as close to the steps into the house as it could.  This behavior began the day the crop formation was discovered and continued for the following 2 weeks. 

In the absence of several of the scientifically documented plant changes which can be expected in crop circles (elongated apical nodes, expulsion cavities) and since the soil work will take time to complete - and given that this is the first time a crop formation with squared edges and an interlacing herringbone pattern in the crop has been observed - BLT is not certain if this is a crop circle or not.   The circles have, over the years, evolved from their original state, and perhaps this Greene County, Ohio event is revealing a brand new aspect of the ongoing phenomenon.

A written report will be posted on the BLT web-site when the germination study and various soils analyses are completed; perhaps then we will have a better idea of which category best suits this event.

17. Juli 2005: Waden Hill, Avebury, Wiltshire, England
Crop circle researcher Rod Bearcloud Berry is visiting the summerly Wiltshire since many years to investigate the crop circle formations in the Alton Barnes - Avebury area. As a native Osage, Bearcloud sees the crop circles as gifts and messages from the so-called "Star Nation" known for a long times in his people's traditions and knowledge.

On July 16, 2005, he had the intense feeling that something would happen in the Avebury area. Therefore he was out in the fields the whole day to observe and to look for new formations. However, at this time there were none. It was the very early next morning, July 17, at about 2:50 AM, when he awoke with again the strong feeling to go to Avebury. Here he arrived at about 3:20 AM at the small car park of the Avebury Social Club just oustide the Avebury stone circle. With his night-vision he was searching through the surrounding fields and in special into the field opoosite to the car park, covering Waden Hill. According to Bearcloud there was nothing visible in the field at that time. Also a second controll-view into the field showed just the undisturbed field. Therefore he continued his way down to Alton Barnes, another one of his personal special places. It was about 4:45 AM that there was enough light to see with the naked eye and Bearcloud returned to Avebury. Arriving at the same car park he was shocked, now just about 75 minutes after his last view into this field, there was a completed new crop circle formation in his full view!

The design resembled a so-called "Penrose Triangle" one of the most famous optical illusions and "impossible bodies". This triangle was surrounded by 24 squared spiral ornaments, very similar to the ornaments used in previous formations the years before (for example the much discussed - and in our view man-made - "Mayan Disc" at Silbury Hill).

Just a few hours later the owning farmer drove his harvester straight through the field to destroy the formation to discourage future visitors from entering his field... So far, so good. Its his field, his crop and his descission to damage it. Strange enough just after this damaging act he placed an box requesting an entrance fee for future visitors to his new crop circle at the fields entrance...
